The University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre (uOSSC) is a state-of-the-art training facility for healthcare professionals.
Specializing in both technical skills training and learning how to manage medical emergencies through theatre-based simulation, the uOSSC is helping the health professionals of today and tomorrow provide world-class quality care to the patients of Ottawa.
But why should the docs and nurses have all the fun practicing?
Everyone has sat at home watching ER or Gray’s Anatomy and thought, “I can do that!” Well thanks to the University of Ottawa Mini Medical School, now you can! Our “doc for a day” event will allow you to experience firsthand the thrill of practicing medicine as part of a healthcare team.
Highlights Include:
- Stitching minor wounds on synthetic skin
- Practicing laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) on box-trainers
- Delivering a simulated baby
- Resuscitating a victim of a slapshot injury
- Placement of a breathing tube
- Shocking a manikin in cardiac arrest
During this half-day event, participants will rotate through different simulated experiences and educational offerings at the uOSSC.
Mini Med School
Doc for a Day is affiliated with Mini Med School, a popular and ever growing concept being offered all over Canada and the United States for the public. It is an innovative and entertaining series of lectures on medicine and health that are ‘just like going to medical school’ (but without the long hours and hard work!) You won’t get a license to practice medicine but you will learn a tremendous amount. You will leave the end of the six week series a more educated consumer of the health care system.
